Many of these products were advertised when the company sponsored the television game show Beat the Clock, including phonographs, radios, and radio clocks. In addition to maintaining its radio tube production, the company began making consumers radio receivers and sets for homes and cars by 1950. ![]() Sylvania purchased the Colonial Radio Corporation of Buffalo, New York, and reorganized it to form its Radio and Television division. By 1945, Sylvania Electric had twenty-nine plants, including the Emporium plant that had produced many tubes for the military. Though the company was primarily devoted to wartime production during World War II, it emerged from the war as the profitable Sylvania Electric Products, Inc. Wise led the company’s tube voltage and technology improvements, aided by a new radio tube plant opening near Hygrade’s operations in Salem, Massachusetts. The company became a prominent manufacturer of radio tubes and incandescent lamps. In 1931, the Hygrade Incandescent Lamp Company (another Philco tube supplier), Nilco, and Sylvania joined to form the Hygrade Sylvania Corporation. The Philco Corporation purchased most of the radio tubes it used from Sylvania Products. A new factory was built in Emporium, Pennsylvania, in 1929. ![]() Wise, an RCA tube designer, joined Sylvania Products.
